WASHINGTON (AP) _ Flight attendants with Alaska Airlines have reported air quality problems in their carrier's planes for most of a decade, and now they believe they have pinpointed the cause: fumes from hydraulic fluid and engine oil.

The flight attendants, who have crosschecked maintenance records with reports of bad air, believe that the fumes have been sucked into their airline's planes through their auxiliary power units. On most airliners, the power unit is located at the back of the airplane, where the engines often are mounted and where many hydraulic connections are made.
