WASHINGTON (AP) _ With most American adults now overweight, the National Institutes of Health is stepping in with guidance for doctors in helping people recognize and deal with their weight problems.

``According to the most recent national survey data, about 55 percent of American adults are overweight or obese _ up from 43 percent in 1960,'' said Karen Donato of NIH's National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

And the added avoirdupois can mean increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, gallbladder disease, arthritis, sleep and breathing problems and some types of cancer, said Dr. F. Xavier ...
