TORONTO (AP) _ For two years, the Toronto Blue Jays have brought in their share of new talent, signing free agents such as Roger Clemens, Randy Myers and Jose Canseco and trading for Jose Cruz Jr.

The change that may make the biggest difference in 1998, however, might be the one in the dugout.

When the Blue Jays fired manager Cito Gaston with only five games left last season, a big reason was the attitude in the clubhouse.

``It was probably the worst atmosphere I've ever been around,'' third baseman Ed Sprague said. ``We were very negative. There was a lot of in-clubhouse fighting.''

There were whispers of cliques, disharmony and selfishness, and more.
