WASHINGTON (AP) _ House Republicans used a routine appropriations hearing Thursday to attack the White House for employing people who used to work for a private investigator, having too many lawyers and withholding information about the cost of letting donors stay overnight at the White House.

``Is this administration conducting a police state inquiry into the backgrounds of private citizens?'' asked Rep. Bob Livingston, R-La., chairman of the House appropriations committee. ``If they are, are they doing it with taxpayer money?''
