UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ African leaders must demonstrate the political will to combat corruption, protect human rights and pursue sound economic policies if they are to overcome Africa's seemingly intractable problems, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said today.
At the same time, Annan said, other countries must respond by investing in Africa and by intervening to end armed conflicts and restore stability.
``The time is long past when one could claim ignorance about what was happening in Africa or what was needed to achieve progress,'' Annan told the Security Council.
