LONDON (AP) _ Scientists have identified the component of breast milk that protects babies from infection by rotavirus, a major cause of potentially deadly diarrhea, according to research published Friday in a British medical journal.

The finding, published in The Lancet, provides more evidence in favor of breast-feeding. It could be a step toward the development of a medicine to be given directly to babies to fight diarrhea, said the study's main author, David Newburg, a biochemist at the Shriver Center for Mental Retardation in Massachusetts.
