ANTANANARIVO, Jan. 11 (IPS) -- Close to half of Madagascar's
pig population has been wiped out by an epidemic of swine fever
detected in mid-December, and officials fear the disease will kill
many more before the virus runs its course.
According to Dr. Ratovo Andriambololona of the island's "Cellule
de crise sur la Peste porcine" (Swine Fever Crisis Unit), 40 to 50
percent of Madagascar's 800,000 pigs have been killed by a
combination of the African and ordinary swine fevers.
While the Indian Ocean island has had frequent bouts of swine
fever, this is its first experience with the African variety, whose
