HONG KONG, Mar. 19 (IPS) -- The real aim of China's intimidating
war games across the Taiwan Strait is democracy, say political
analysts.
A more democratic Taiwan, after decades of autocratic rule,
would ultimately give more legitimacy to any demands for
independence in the eyes of the world, making it harder for Beijing
to try to retake the island peacefully, says Byron Weng, a
professor of politics at Hong Kong's Chinese University.
"China sees democracy as an instrument of Taiwanese
independence," he says.
