Tuberculosis cases reach record low
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., March 24 (UPI) _ The number of tuberculosis cases
reported to the Illinois Department of Public Health reached a record
low last year.
State health officials said today there were 850 cases reported during
1998 _ a 13 percent drop from the year before.
The 974 cases reported during 1997 was the state's previous record low.
Public Health Director John Lumpkin notes the 13 percent drop was the
biggest one-year decline in tuberculosis cases since 1983. Tuberculosis
is a life-threatening disease transmitted through the air.
