RIO DE JANEIRO, Mar. 28 (IPS) -- The government of this city,
considered the most violent in Brazil, has vowed to seize some
300,000 firearms illegally held by civilians.
The disarming program, the most ambitious of its type ever
undertaken in the country, is counting on the support of various
non-governmental organizations and pacifist movements of Rio de
Janeiro, where an average of 20 people are killed every weekend.
The nearly 10 million inhabitants of the former Brazilian
capital are traumatized by the rise in urban violence registered
