Maine is one of four states that have received federal funding to develop a
new birth defects registry that will track the number and kinds of birth
defects.
One of the goals of the program is to identify clusters and trends in spina
bifida, heart defects, cleft lip and palate, and other birth defects.
Officials also hope that by requiring the reporting of birth defects, they'll
be better able to direct families to medical services, such as specialty
clinics that can teach parents about nutrition, physical therapy and treatment
options for their disabled children.
Ultimately, the aim is prevention.
