NSW: Scientists discover stripe rust in barley

SYDNEY, Dec 16 AAP - Scientists have discovered a strain of stripe rust capable of the
rapid-infection of the nations second biggest winter crop - barley.

Director-General of NSW Agriculture, Dr Kevin Sheridan, said the discovery would cause
significant concern for barley growers and processors.

"While stripe rust has been a problem for wheat growers for nearly 20 years, this new
development in barley will require immediate adjustment to plant breeding programs in order to
develop resistant varieties," Dr Sheridan said.
