QLD: Doctors seek clarification on blood transfusions

BRISBANE, Dec 23 AAP - Doctors want clarification about their legal standing if they order
life-preserving blood transfusions for people who may not want them, such as Jehovah's
Witnesses who oppose them for religious reasons.

This follows two recent deaths of Jehovah's Witnesses in Brisbane and publicity surrounding
two legal cases involving women who were given blood transfusions without their consent.

Australian Medical Association president Dr Dana Wainwright said today doctors wanted
clarification of their legal standing.

"We have a duty of care to preserve life," she said.
