VIC: Private prison attacked as wasteful
MELBOURNE, Jan 6 AAP - Building a new private prison to cope with increasing numbers of
inmates would be a waste of $40 million of taxpayers' money, the state opposition said today.
Premier Jeff Kennett has said a new private prison may have to be built to cope with his
government's tougher sentencing laws.
But Opposition Corrections spokesman Andre Haermeyer said this was false economy.
"It is just a warped sense of priorities to be throwing away $40 million a year on another
private prison," he said.
He estimated it would cost taxpayers $40 million to contract out the services for a 600-bed
prison.
