FED: Fischer defends public servants pay rise

CANBERRA, Jan 7 AAP - Acting Prime Minister Tim Fischer today defended pay rises of up to
40 per cent for senior public servants on the grounds it was the only way to attract the
calibre of bureaucrat needed in the federal government.

The Australian newspaper today reported the pay rises, which would take some public
servants to salaries of up to $300,000 a year, were tied to a new employment regime for the 18
heads of government departments, and other office holders.

These involved short-term, performance-based contracts.
