VIC: Australia Day jubilation as trekkers reach South Pole

MELBOURNE, Jan 26 AAP/NZPA - Two Australians and a New Zealander were celebrating Australia
Day at the South Pole tonight after beating blizzards and illness to complete an 84-day trek
across the Antarctic ice.
Australians Eric Philips (Philips) and Jon Muir and New Zealander Peter Hillary battled
gastroenteritis and frostbite in an effort to retrace the unassisted return polar journey that
killed Captain Robert Scott and his entire team in 1912.
The Australia-New Zealand team successfully completed the first leg today, but decided
