FED: Prison population grows by 8.7 per cent

CANBERRA, April 14 AAP - Australia's prison population grew by 8.7 per cent last year due
mainly to big increases in New South Wales and Queensland.

The average daily numbers of prisoners rose by 530 (11.8 per cent) in Queensland and 495
(7.8 per cent) in NSW in the year ending December 1998, according to Australian Bureau of
Statistics (ABS) figures released today.

The Queensland rise reflected a doubling of the state's prison population in the past five
years, a Queensland Corrective Services Commission spokesman said.
