At one point a week ago Monday night, one of the noisiest places in Portland
had gone silent. No hum of talk, no bursts of laughter.
No thrum of balls rolling down lanes. No crash of pins.
Just the soft whir of a dryer blowing hot air onto Dan Walker's sweaty hands.
Just the beat of a heart only Walker could hear.
Word had spread quickly around Yankee Lanes that Walker was one ball away
from a perfect game. One more strike added to all the others and he would have
300, a score he had not reached in about 20 years of competitive bowling.
