President Mandela receives U.S.'s highest award, makes congressional plea for Africa
The U.S. government gave South African President Nelson Mandela its highest honour on Wednesday, awarding hi a Congressional Gold Medal for ending apartheid and promoting reconciliation in South Africa.
In a rare display of unity, Democratic President Bill Clinton and the Republican-held Congress Mandela with the medal in an elaborate ceremony at the Capitol building's central Rotunda.
Mandela became the 100th person and the first African to receive the medal, which has been awarded to people ranging from George Washington to Mother Teresa.
