BRUSSELS, Apr. 30 (IPS) -- The European Union today asked for
formal consultations with the United States on its new anti-Cuba
legislation and warned that similar action could be taken if
Washington adopted new laws to curb foreign businesses dealing with
Libya and Iran.
A spokesman for the European Commission said the EU move on the
Cuban legislation was the first step in a procedure which could
lead to the creation of a dispute settlement panel in the
Geneva-based World Trade Organization (WTO).
The European action focusses on the so-called Cuban Liberty and
Democratic Solidarity Act, also known as the Helms-Burton bill. It
