The Secret Advice of Henry Hyde
In July 1983, Henry Hyde stood in the well of the U.S. House of Representatives in an attempt to save his fellow Republican and colleague from southern Illinois, Daniel Crane, from congressional censure. Mr. Crane, a married father of six, had admitted a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female congressional page. A House ethics panel recommended a mere "reprimand." But Newt Gingrich -- still more than a decade from the speaker's chair -- argued that "reprimand" was too mild. He wanted Mr. Crane expelled.
