Jewish Pride Reawakens in Labor Movement

NEW YORK -- Nancy Mills' awakening as a labor union activist came in 1973, as a worker in a hospital in Washington, D.C., where four different unions were trying to recruit members. But her awakening as a Jewish trade unionist came a few moments later.

She was visiting a boyfriend in New York City, who took her to the Strand bookstore to remedy her lack of knowledge about labor history. One of the books they picked out was a history of the fur-and leather-workers' unions. She started reading it on the subway, and she came across the name of one union activist called Oizer "Sam" Shachtman.
