New York deserves a hate crimes law now
It is easy to cubbyhole the sickening, anti-gay murder of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming and lack of legislation to confront such atrocities as something that happens "out there." The reality, of course, is that hate-motivated violence remains virulent right here in New York, and our Legislature refuses to adopt laws to confront the problem.
Hate-based crimes and their consequences are indelibly seared into our city's consciousness. Think of Bensonhurst, Howard Beach or Crown Heights. Virtually every community recalls its victims. African-Americans recall Yusef Hawkins and Michael Griffith. Jews know about the awful ...
