Cumberland County commissioners voted Monday to increase the pay of veteran
corrections officers to solve what they called a dangerous staff shortage at
the county jail.
An average of three officers have quit their jobs every month this year, and
as many as 20 positions have been vacant at one time. Cumberland County Jail
administrators have tried to make up for the shortage with overtime shifts and
by keeping inmates locked in their cells for most of the day.
"The situation is potentially dangerous not only for prisoners," Commissioner
Gary Plummer said, "but also to the employees of Cumberland County."
