Tobacco Settlement Makes Cigarette Tax Increase More Difficult

Anti-smoking groups in Mary-and were hoping to push through a $1.50 tax increase on cigarettes, out now find themselves in the pre????arious situation of losing the batle. Until last week, the groups stood a good chance of seeing an increase because many legislators were in support.

However, the announced settlement by the tobacco companies and the states makes the increase seem a dead issue. Supporters of the tax increase say that they are very close to having a majority in both houses of the General Assembly once it begins the session in January.
