Participants at a conference on Jewish identity yesterday were divided over whether Jewish identity in Israelis and Diaspora Jews is converging or moving further apart.

They also wondered whether Jewish identity was solely religious. "Israeliness is also part of the Jewish identity," said Eliezer Schweid who with Rabbi Naftali Rothenberg chaired the fourth annual conference on the Framework for Contemporary Jewish Thought and Identity at the Van Leer Institute .
