Cleaver Suffers Brain Hemorrhage.

Eldridge Cleaver, a leader in the Black Panther Party in the late 1960s, was arrested in Berkeley last week on drug charges and then suffered a brain hemorrhage.

Doctors at Alta Bates Medical Center upgraded Cleaver's condition today from critical to serious, hospital spokeswoman Carolyn Kemp said.

Cleaver, 58, remained unconscious but responded appropriately to doctors' prodding, Kemp said. She said it was too early to tell if Cleaver was out of danger or evaluate his chances for a full recovery.
