Last month, the Stephen Smith Home for the Aged, the oldest African-American nursing home in the nation, celebrated its 130th anniversary at the First District Plaza, 3801 Market St.

Stephen Smith, a West Philadelphia institution at Girard and Belmont Avenues, has been owned by Mercy-Douglass Corp., a African-American-owned health and human services organization since 1985.
