The lyrics of a popular song tell us to "teach them well and let them lead the way." I know African-American children can and do learn when we teach them well. In fact, all children can and do learn when they are taught well. The problem is too often in the teaching of our children. We have created systems that have a difficult time understanding how to reach and teach the individual child.

All children are special, and have special gifts which they bring to the system, but the system has a prescription that is used to teach all children the same ...
