Shortly after confirming independence with a December 1, 1991, referendum, Ukraine set out to prove its existence by setting up diplomatic representations abroad. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's latest list of diplomatic representations puts the number at 37 worldwide, including permanent missions, embassies and consulates. Today, Ukraine is represented in all the Group of 7 industrial states except Japan, and most recently opened an Embassy in Havana, Cuba.
