Where is the search for "Federal Acknowledgement" taking Tribes?.

What is federal recognition about?

"To be or not to be a "federally-recognized" or "federally acknowledged" tribe. That is the question."

Ah, but it is much, so much more than that. At present, there are a little over 500 "recognized" tribal entities in the United States and over 100 allegedly "non-recognized" tribal groups, some jockeying, many struggling, to join political hands with the federal government and other acknowledged tribes.

Mid-winter is a good time to pause and reflect on this important subject matter and to ask ourselves, again: What is recognition all about? Who ...
