It's easy to write off the rampage murders Dr. Baruch Goldstein perpetrated as the unexplainable behavior of a madman, as some people have done. It's also easy, as others have done, to use this horror to condemn all the west bank settlers as well as Israel's overall policies in the territories. But both these positions are simplistic and misleading.
Goldstein may have been a lunatic, but his lunacy was based on a deeply held ideology -- the belief that Jews have the God-given right to inhabit and control every inch of a ...
