A New History of African American Artists.

African-American artists who worked prior to middle of this century were often publicly ignored. When their work was noticed, they were generally seen as black artists, not great artists who were black.

There was little record of their development and achievements. Now, a new book attempts to document their story. A History of African-American Artists, From 1792 to the Present by Harry Henderson and the late artist Romare Bearden is the most ambitious work to date on the subject.
