Baltimore fights for 'Empowerment Zone,' $100 million grant.

Victory will bring Baltimore $100 million to be dispersed among three of the city's most depressed corridors:

For the second time in less than a year, Baltimoreans, from elected officials to business leaders, are anxiously awaiting a decision which would provide an immediate cash infusion for Maryland's largest city, and bolster its civic pride.

First it was the NFL and a much sought after football franchise, now it is the Department of Housing and Urban Development and a $100 million empowerment zone.

Earlier this year Mayor Kurt Schmoke announced his intention to hotly pursue Baltimore's bid to become one of nine federally funded empowerment zones in the United States. …
