Ralph Waldo Ellison is remembered as a powerful, moving force in the modern day civil rights movement, without, in the opinion of some, becoming directly involved in the struggle.

No one, however, questions the impact his classic fictional novel, "The Invisible Man," had on African-Americans, whites and people throughout the world.

He is mostly remembered that way, following his death in New York City Saturday at the age of 80.
