Curtis Mayfield: 'Living Legend.

When singer and songwriter Curtis Mayfield received the "Living Legend" award at the recent Grammy Awards show it was truly deserved.

Mayfield's contributions to the music industry are gigantic.

Mayfield's efforts were not overnight. He paid his dues.

The 51-year-old Mayfield came up with a love and talent for music.

In 1957 Mayfield, along with Jerry Butler, Sam Gooden, Arthur Brooks and Richard Brooks, formed a group called the Roosters. In 1958 the Roosters, now called Jerry Butler and the Impressions had a top R&B hit with the ballad "For Your Precious Love."

The success of that record led Butler to go solo.
