Labor issues are challenge for high-ranking black woman cop.

Florastine Creed has been a Boston police officer for nearly 16 years, but she almost chose another career path.

With the prodding of a good friend, Creed finally abandoned her idea of becoming a corrections officer and agreed to take the police exam.

She passed without a hitch and today, she is Boston's first black female deputy superintendent.

Creed was tapped for the deputy superintendent position and also as director of the force's Labor Relations Department by Police Commissioner Paul Evans April 8. She called the announcement by Evans surprising but extremely gratifying.
