Civil war, slavery cry out for notice in Sudan.

A 40-year-old civil war, institutionalized slavery, ethnic conflict, famine and disease have wreaked havoc on Sudan. Over the last 10 years, it is estimated that over 1.5 million people have died in the northeast African nation while the international community has remained unwilling or unable to interfere.

A United States effort at mediating the conflict between the warring factions--the north and south of the country--could help avert further bloodshed, according to Sudan expert Robert Collins.
