Dictator loses to democracy.

An era ended last week when voters in Malawi gave the boot to Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the self-proclaimed "President for life."
Bakili Muluzi was declared the victor in Malawi's first democratic elections last week after returns showed him with 1.2 million votes, compared to 800,000 for Banda and about 600,000 for Chakufwa Chihana, a popular labor leader.
Banda outlasted all but one of the original African nationalists who took power from colonialists in the 1950's and 1960's and stamped the continent with their highly personal variants of one-man rule.
