MURDER SUSPECT PLEADS GUILTY TO LESSER CHARGE

Ivan Sanchez gestured to an obviously flawed smile when he admitted
to police in 1987 that he killed Robert Merkerson outside a Passaic bar
in retribution for knocking out his tooth a few days earlier.
But when Sanchez got to court two years later, he was not only shy
a tooth, his memory seemed to have disappeared, too. He pleaded not
guilty -- even though authorities had a confession that helped them win a
conviction, which was later overturned on a technicality.
