JOHN McGahern was introduced recently to one of New York's veteran literary centers, the 92 St. Y, although the once-banned writer needs no introduction in his native Ireland.

Even Samuel Beckett was drawn into the protest when, in 1965, Dublin's Archbishop banned McGahern's novel The Dark and had him fired from his teaching post. When asked to sign a petition being organized in Paris, Beckett, before signing, though to ask if the writer approved of this protest in his name.
