A year ago, New Jersey bankers were bracing for an onslaught of
mergers. On Wall Street, rumors of takeover deals involving some of the
state's most prominent banks were floating around like so much ticker
tape.
Analysts offered bold predictions. "I put New Jersey banks into two
categories," said one. "They're either making acquisitions, or they're
