FIFTY YEARS AGO, on Aug. 6, 1945, the first atomic weapon ever
employed in war was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three
days later the second, and last ever to be so used, destroyed Nagasaki.
On Aug. 15 Japan surrendered to the United Nations, ending World War
II.
The bomb was met with wonder and jubilation at first, with the
soldiers and sailors who were expecting to assault Japan overflowing
with emotion.
