On Aug. 15, our nation commemorates Victory in Japan Day and the
end of World War II. As many memorial services are held, let us not
forget the part played by the U.S. merchant marine in bringing the war
to a victorious conclusion.

U.S. merchant ships -- cargo ships, tankers, and troop transports,
manned by volunteer merchant seamen -- carried the material needed to
supply the troops and naval ships. The merchant seamen, together with
the U.S. Navy Armed Guard, manned the guns aboard the vessels as they
