The death this week of Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Schneerson has fueled speculation about who will move into the leadership of his far-flung Chasidic empire. There are no sons to receive his mantle, nor daughters to provide for succession by a son-in-law.

Some recent articles suggest that the movement, which raises and spends an estimated $250 million each year worldwide, will disintegrate, perhaps to be divided among Schneerson's chief aides of among powerful emissaries who control multimillion-dollar budgets.
