In the grey mists of Poland Jews hear whispers of hope.

Our first 24 hours in Poland confirmed all the stereo-typed images that Westerners in general, and Jews in particular, have of that country.

Landing in Warsaw, we disembarked on a raw, gray and windy morning, the type best approached with an umbrella and a turned-up collar. Here was the Poland so many Westerners have heard about: grim, somewhat polluted and not terribly inviting.
