Storytelling led to gospel and blues.

The blues and gospel music developed out of a storytelling tradition of African-American primarily from the Southern region of the United States. Part of what is referred to as the "deep structure" aesthetic of the African-American, the African cultural norm of communicating through music was a tradition passed down. The tunes dealt with the (gamut) of human emotions and experiences such as marriage, love, relationship, deception, fear, and religious zeal.
