Filipino American Labor Leader Dies.
BAKERSFIELD (CA) -- After complications following recent surgery, long-time labor activist Philip Villamin Vera Cruz died Saturday, June 11 at age 89. Vera Cruz was a former vice president of the United Farmworkers Union, the first Filipino American officer of the internationally renowned union.
Deborah Vollmer, his long-time companion of 19 years whom he met while she was an attorney for the UFW, said that Vera Cruz' lungs were weak from lung emphysema, a condition that she says "goes back to his working in the fields" and that he was unable to recover from an infection that developed after the surgery.
