RELAY TEAM RUNNERS-UP TO CANADA

ATLANTA -- Not one, but two stunning upsets hit the United States 400-meter
relay team Saturday, and it's hard to tell which is more shocking.

The first was when U.S. coach Erv Hunt, faced with the choice of
making Nike, NBC, and the power brokers of track and field happy by
putting Carl Lewis on the team, or doing the honorable and fair thing by
leaving him off, did the honorable and fair thing.

The second was when the United States lost the Olympic relay final
for the first time ever.

To Canada.
