Death may be rare, but people can suffer devastating reactions from
allergies to foods, such as peanuts, if they are not treated quickly,
two North Jersey allergists said Thursday.

Even the smell of certain foods can send people who are truly
allergic into anaphylactic shock, an immune system response that
produces immunoglobulin antibodies to a perceived invading protein, Dr.
Maryann Colenda of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center said.
